Expats Blog Writing Contest 2013

Hey everyone!

I’m really excited to announce that I’ve entered my first writing contest! The contest is held by ExpatsBlog.com and this year they’ve combined their annual blog awards with a writing contest so I’m really looking forward to it.

The theme of the contest was “Top” lists and the pieces had to be written about your expat country, mine being Spain. I thought long and hard about what to write about… the Top Ten Tapas in Spain seemed a bit worn out and I’ve definitely read more than a few articles about the Top Beaches on the Iberian Peninsula.

I was stuck until I decided to look at it from a different angle. Lots of people write about the things they love about their expat country, the result of which being a romanticized picture of expat life, as if we all live the day-to-day wearing rose colored glasses. I decided to go about it a different way and I highlighted the Top Five Frustrations for Expats in Spain (and why we’re still here!).

I thought it would be interesting to give readers a more realistic idea of what it’s like to actually LIVE in Spain, not just to vacation here- but I couldn’t hang my poor (literally) adopted country out to dry like that, so of course I added in the reasons you should all just pick up and move here anyway!

So there you have it! I really hope you guys like the article, and if you think it deserves it, please leave a comment over on the contest page! Some of the winners of the contest will be determined by the highest number of thoughtful comments, therefore, there is a minimum of 10 words per comment to avoid people upping their numbers by getting lots of “great article!” comments, and to encourage readers/voters to actually read the articles and contribute a brief thought!

You can read my article and leave a comment over on the contest page! I would be truly grateful for your support on my first contest ever. Thanks everyone, and Happy Holidays!

P.S. If you enjoy my article, please share it! There are a few prizes for the most shared and tweeted entries, so I need your help spreading the social media love!

  1. I´ve also entered for Spain! I´m trying to contact all the other writers in our group so we can comment on each others and help each other out! The post about Mallorca has over 100 so maybe Spain can win for most comments! I´ll be sure to comment on yours before the contest ends! 🙂

  2. Chels, great point about being THE American people think of when talking about the U.S. I couldn’t imagine being the representative for my whole country! Interesting point, and great entry!
